Mock bomb attack on newspaper publisher's home follows assault on sports editor
Organisation:
A parcel containing the ingredients of a home-made bomb was found outside the garage door of the home of Eleftherotypia publisher Christos Tegopoulos last night, a day after the daily's sports editor, Philippos Syrigos, was the victim of a violent attack on an Athens street.
The police exploded the parcel after being alerted by an anonymous phone call. Its contents included three small cooking gas canisters.

19.10.04 - Violent assault on sports editor known for his reports on doping
Reporters Without Borders voiced shock today at the violent attack yesterday in Athens on sports editor Philippos Syrigos of the daily Eleftherotypia, who was stabbed and beaten with iron bars on the head and back by at least three thugs wearing motorcycle helmets. Syrigos is well known for his reports on doping.
The organisation called on interior minister Constantine Skandalidis to ensure that the assailants are quickly identified and punished, warning that, "it would be dangerous to let a feeling of impunity take hold."
Syrigos was attacked at about 4 p.m. yesterday as he was leaving the studios of radio Sport FM in the district of Kallithea. He was rushed to hospital and, according to his newspaper, his condition is now stable and he is out of danger.
As well as doping, Syrigos is also known for writing about hooliganism and the heavy debts of some of Greece's football clubs. He recently assisted the Greek authorities in doping cases.
